The Renaissance Battle of the Sexes Online!

Art as a window to inequality...

rape2.jpg (103630 bytes) Pinturicchio,

Here, shown by Pinturicchio, the male/female relationships in the Renaissance were no more perfect than today. Even in what appears to be an extremely formal and beautiful occasion, evil can and will occur. This apparent assault proves the existence of an underlying darkness in the enlightening era of the Renaissance. The role of a male as completely dominant in society was so overpowering, that even this unrelated art piece contains the inequalities inherent in society’s treatment of women.
